Life Coaching
Life coaching helps clients to determine and achieve personal goals, guides and empowers; with an ultimate goal of improved quality of life.
Life coaching begins with establishing long-term goals. These goals are individualized, based on what you believe will improve your quality of life. You receive four 45-minute coaching sessions per month for 6 months, over the telephone and or in person. At this time, clients determine if they would like to participate in a maintenance program; consisting of one coaching session per month for approximately 6 months.
Life coaches provide:
- Encouragement
- Problem solving strategies
- Direction
- Resources
- Structure
- Accountability
- Support
Each coaching session concludes with 2-3 action steps or short term goals, to be completed by you, the client, before the next session. This is a crucial component of the coaching model, creating an action based program that keeps you moving forward toward your goals. You and your life coach will review your progress with you at 3, 6, and 12 months.
All of our life coaches have completed a comprehensive training program, and participate in weekly supervision meetings. The variety of life experiences of the KnowBarriers life coaches helps us meet the diverse needs of our clients.. See Coach Bios to learn more about us.

Meet Ignacio - “KnowBarriers taught me not to be afraid and to set goals for my life even though I’m like this..”
Peer Mentoring
KnowBarriers Peer Mentor Program was established to provide newly injured patients at Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center with a hopeful look toward their future.
Peer Mentors are chosen exclusively from Life Coaching graduates and referred to Rancho Volunteer Services. Once they have completed the mandatory orientation and screening, additional training is provided by KnowBarriers on the roles and responsibilities of being a good peer mentor, how to model behavior, etc.
Mentors co-lead patient education classes, provide skill demonstration for patients and staff, and provide overall support to patients and families during the adjustment to their injury.
The KnowBarriers Peer Mentor program is a great example of "paying it forward."
"The KnowBarriers peer mentor program is great for getting our patients focused on what is possible and what they can do instead of what they can’t.”- Bruce Coy, Physical Therapist."

Violence Prevention Outreach
The mission of KnowBarriers Violence Prevention Outreach program is to provide a safe and healthy environment for youth in urban areas.
KnowBarriers facilitates violence prevention and teen pregnancy prevention workshops. Through participation in educational workshops, students learn how to problem solve and identify causes for teen pregnancy, gang violence, drug abuse, and family and dating violence.
Our goal is to provide students the benefit of life skills training using a cognitive behavioral approach. We believe consistent Life Skills training throughout the middle school and early high school years will fill the void of limited positive role models and prepare students to make safe choices.

Meet Eric - “KnowBarriers is exactly what I was searching for. It allows me to apply my past lifestyle with my new Gang Prevention / Intervention certification..."
Students are identified by the amount of violent acts committed, truancy rates, drug and alcohol incidents, and any gang involvement including but not limited to tagging crews, squads, and party crews.
KnowBarriers violence prevention specialists work individually with students who meet the criteria of “the most at risk.” The violence prevention specialist meets with the student, parent, and school representative to introduce the KnowBarriers program. Students meet with the violence prevention specialist one hour per week, during an elective class.
The KnowBarriers violence prevention outreach staff grew up in the inner city and have first-hand experience with drugs, violence, and teen pregnancy. Many of them are victims of violence who are living their lives in wheelchairs. This is not only a testimony to their courage but a constant reminder of the negative impact of gun violence. Their experience adds a critical understanding of the challenges our youth face and enables them to become a powerful tool for change. Many of our staff are graduates of the KnowBarries Life Coaching program.

Substance Abuse Prevention
KnowBarriers provides Substance Abuse services to inpatients and outpatients at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center.
Patients are given the opportunity to participate in One to One counseling sessions, Support Group meetings & referral to outside agencies for their substance abuse needs.
Many spinal cord injury patients struggle with the temptation of relying on drugs and or alcohol as a coping strategy for dealing with their physical status. Know Barriers is dedicated to addressing this need.
One-on-One sessions allow the patient the opportunity to share their substance abuse struggles with a credentialed professional who is there to listen, assist & support their recovery/sobriety efforts.
Support groups provide clients with the ability to verbalize their substance abuse struggles among peers who struggle with the same issues, day in & day out. Patients are empowered & supported by each other. These meetings are facilitated by our Substance abuse counselor.
